My love for the toon…

Before I start I’d better explain. The Toon are Newcastle United. The Toon Army are their fans, and I count myself amongst their number. And this weekend (Sunday 23rd at 1.30pm to be precise) is our biggest match of the season. It’s not a cup final, or a match in Europe (not this season anyway!!). It’s a match against our nearest rivals, Sunderland. If you’re not a sports fan then I don’t think you’d fully appreciate why this is such a big thing. And it’s a difficult thing to try to explain to someone too!!

There’s definitely something tribal about it. There’s some pride in there too. And lots of disappointment (especially, if like me you follow the toon!!). I’ve followed them for more years than I care to remember, through thick and thin. It’s almost like a perfect marriage. A true football fan will always pick one team and that’s them for life. For me it’s the toon. Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that Michael Owen’s hamstring will recover so he can bag us a couple of goals come Sunday lunchtime!
