Or at least Psychoticmonkey is changing. I’ve been quite quiet over the past few weeks (as you can tell), and with good reason. I’m branching out, kind of. I’ve decided that, rather than fill up the pages of Psychoticmonkey with bits of everything, I’m going to start using different blogs to write about different topics. The first 2 new ones have been registered and will be appearing soon. The first one will relate to gadgets and technology and the second will be more science and nature focused (do I sound like Trivial Pursuits yet?). They’re not quite ready yet so please bear with me while I work on them. There may also be a new gaming blog appearing in the near future but I’ll post an update on that when it happens!

You know how some days you just wake up and things seem strange? Well today was like that for me. All I can remember dreaming is that I was in a competition trying to come up with a limerick about animals. Don’t ask me why, I just was, OK? I’d gotten 4 lines through it before my alarm went off, and so naturally my brain decided that I should finish it off once I’d woken up. And now I can’t get the blasted thing out of my head. So in the interest of sharing, here it is:

There once was a cow who liked boxing,
And he fought with the strength of an oxen,
He’d use power of course,
To defeat a big horse,
But for squirrels he’d have to out-fox ‘em.

And so there it is. A scary insight into where my head is at today. Oh dear…

Over here at istherefood.com, Dan has posted his 12 month anniversary post (and bravo on that one Dan). It makes for a cracking read, and posts the question “Why do you blog?”. And for me that’s an interesting one. I remember when Dan was convincing me that I should start blogging (and it seems like a long time ago now but it’s only around 8 months ago) and I remember thinking “But what would I write? What could I possibly be thinking that anyone will want to read?”. And at times even now I still have these thoughts. However my stats would tend to paint a different story.

Whilst I’m not hitting the levels that other blogs will hit, I still receive far more traffic than I ever thought I would. And I have to admit I’d love to know what people think when they find psychoticmonkey.co.uk. Do they wonder what the inane ramblings actually mean? Do they wonder about the person behind the monkey mask? Do they think that everything I write is a load of rubbish?? I really don’t know.

You see for me, blogging is something that I want to do. When I first started my blog I really didn’t know what to write about. I posted a few things about games I was playing and that’s kind of continued. The majority of my postings now relate to games (as Dan refers to in his post). I post the odd bit about football, a very (very) small bit about photography and aviation (2 hobbies I often combine) and then just some general musings. But being able to have a platform and an e-voice is all I ever wanted to have. I’ve never been in this for the money or personal gain. I don’t feel the need (like some) to pass off the work of others as my own to make a name for myself. I just enjoy sharing my opinions, no matter how controversial others may feel they are.

Reading Dan’s article has made me think about what I want to achieve from blogging. It’s a very tricky question. Ask most people why they do something that they enjoy and I think the majority of responses would be “Because I enjoy it”. And that’s what blogging gives to me. I do it for no other reason than the enjoyment. That is both the reason I do it, and also what I want to achieve from it. I don’t care if I don’t take millions of hits a month (I’d have given up long before now if I did want that) although give me millions of hits a month and I’ll be flattered. At the end of the day, I use this as a kind of electronic brain dump on certain subjects (there are some things I will never post about for various reasons).

So where does this leave me? Well I guess that as long as I’m enjoying it, I’ll carry on blogging. When it comes to the point that I’m no longer having fun, then I won’t blog. I’ll pack it away and forget about it and move on to the next thing (don’t worry I don’t think I’ll ever move across to podcasts!!) whatever that may be. In the mean time, grab a comfy chair, put your feet up, peel yourself a banana, and get ready for more Monkey thoughts in the very near future…

News has broken this morning of the death of Steve Irwin, Crocodile Hunter (to give him his full title). It appears that he was filming on the Great Barrier Reef, and his chest was peirced by the barb of a Stingray. Despite the efforts of the paramedic team who were on-site, they weren’t able to save him. He’ll be remembered for tackling some of the most fearsome creatures on the planet in front of film crews, and also for his work in the conservation area. On a slightly lighter note, seems the world may now be a safer place for all those crocodiles….

Just a quick post this morning after running the gauntlet of trying to get to work. If any of you reading this have driven to Crufts at the NEC yesterday or today can I offer a word of advice? Please stop trying to drive into my car whilst being more concerned about your dogs than what is on the road around you. It’s becoming very annoying, and not a little dangerous. Also, if you take a look outside your windows you will notice that there are some silvery reflective things. The rest of the population call them mirrors and they allow you to see behind you. This is helpful when trying to pull into a non-existent space where there is already a car as they will help you judge when it is safe to switch lanes. Please try and use them. There are also some little orange flashing lights on the side of your car, but lets take one thing at a time shall we…

Well here it is… I’ve been threatening to blog for a while, and so now I will (and I am!!). But why Psychotic Monkey?? It was one of those things that was a throw away comment in the office, and immediately I thought “Oooo, nice name for a blog!!”, and so the home of the psychotic monkey was born (although I guess they may be a dangerous breed). We have a monkey forest near where I live, and I’m fairly sure that none of them are psychotic, or at least none of them have the red eyes!!

So what will psychotic monkey be?? Well at the moment I have no idea at all!! It will contain musings, snippets and general rubbish from in my head, based around the things I like doing. These include music, films, playing games, the odd bit of sport, my interest in aviation and the photography thereof, and anything else that I think is worthy of inclusion. So to end my initial (short) post I’ve got to include a thanks to Dan for helping me set this up (along with the new site for the aviation photography – which I’ll provide a link to once it’s finished!!!). Dan is the owner of istherefood.com which is linked to over there -> so go take a look…
